John W. Norton letters, 1894-1900.

The collection consists of approximately 130 letters written by John W. Norton to his wife and children, and to one of his business partners, Thomas C. Pease, covering the years 1896 to 1899. The collection also includes a letter written to Norton by C. G. Pringle in 1894, encouraging him to come to Mexico, and a letter dated February 3, 1900, describing Norton's death. The letters include information about management of the coffee plantation and about life in Mexico. They also reveal Norton's concern about his wife and children in Rutland, Vermont, and contain much advice about finances, his daughters' education and household management.

Cyrus G. Pringle (1838-1911) was an American botanist who spent his career cataloging the plants of North America, especially in Mexico. He was born on May 6, 1838 in East Charlotte, Vermont. John W. Norton was born August 27, 1839 in Moretown, Vermont. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1861 and then took a post as principal of the Thetford Academy. While at the Academy, he enlisted in the 8th Vermont Volunteer Regiment and served from 1863 to 1865. From 1867 to 1871 he worked as a merchant in Plattsburgh, New York, and then worked as a clerk at a woolen mill in Winooski, Vermont.
